Symptom
When an output device is being created in transaction SPAD, it is not obvious for users to determine an appropriate device type for a printer.
Other terms
SPAD, output device, device type, wizard

Solution
In order to make the output device creation process easier, a new wizard has been introduced in transaction SPAD. With a few pieces of specified information, the wizard will recommend you an appropriate device type for a printer. The wizard is available on 6.20 systems and above with the following Support Packages:
SAP_BASIS Release 6.20: SAPKB62063
SAP_BASIS Release 6.40: SAPKB64021
SAP_BASIS Release 7.00: SAPKB70014
SAP_BASIS Release 7.10: SAPKB71004
A detail operation guide, selectdevtype_wizard.pdf, is attached to this note.
The information the wizard shows is stored in database tables. Since new printers are being introduced day by day, the tables need updating periodically. (It will be unnecessary to update the tables if you do not create an output device, as the tables are used only by the wizard and there is no dependency.) New datasets are provided as attachments to this note in XML format. A simple operation will allow you to update the database tables on your system. The exact steps are described in Chapter 3 of the above mentioned document, selectdevtype_wizard.doc. (The user interface has been enhanced on 09/2007. The document is based on the enhanced user interface. However, it is easy to imagin how to operate the old wizard from the document.)
The file name of a new dataset is tspopi-yyyymmdd.xml (zipped) where yyyymmdd is the date.
IMPORTANT: When you use the wizard for the first time, it is necessary to update the database tables.
Some features exist only in certain Netweaver Enhancement Packages.
