Symptom
When trying to download and start an SAP Shortcut from an URL received e.g. via mail, Internet Explorer is started to download the SAP Shortcut from the specified site. After the download is completed, Internet Explorer is closed again but the SAP Shortcut is not started.

Reason and Prerequisites
This problem occurs if Internet Explorer is the default browser, the option “Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed” in the advanced options of Internet Explorer is activated and IE is not running when the download of SAP Shortcut is triggered.
Solution
The problem described above is caused by a bug in Microsoft Internet Explorer which only occurs for small files when the above prerequisites are fullfilled.
Microsoft has been informed about this problem and is providing patches for this problem. The corrections are distributed to all users with the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer MS08-058 from October 2008. The link to the patch is:
