Reason and Prerequisites
The Quick Guide provided for each SAP Best Practices package refers to two relevant SAP ABAP application server add-ons. One configuration / content add-on (BP-ERP05 or BP-CRM60 ) and one tool add-on representing the SAP Best Practices Solution Builder (formerly known as SAP Best Practices Installation Assistant and/or Building Block Installer – BP-INSTASS).

January 2009:
General revision of this release note
I. General Information
SAP Best Practices packages provide preconfigured business processes and project accelerators to streamline customer implementations. These packages are rarely pure documentation based, like SAP NetWeaver BI, but most of the time they are technically founded on two SAP ABAP application server add-ons – plus detailed documentation about the covered scenarios with exact implementation and configuration description.
In the configuration add-on, the required BC-Sets, eCATTs, forms and related objects are technically bundled and delivered. Whereas the SAP Best Practices Solution Builder (formerly known as SAP Best Practices Installation Assistant and/or Building Block Installer) contains the tool framework for the implementation using the SAP Best Practices content. Therefore for an implementation which makes use of a SAP Best Practices package, you always need BOTH add-ons and separately they make no sense.
This implementation method is called a SAP Best Practices package activation.
II. Overview
If a SAP Best Practices package is provided on a higher SAP application release then the previous version will no longer be delivered. – e. g. SAP Best Practices baseline package Germany V5.600 has been replaced by SAP Best Practices baseline package Germany V1.603.
As well a changed version on the same application release replaces the one. – e. g. SAP Best Practices baseline package Germany V2.603 would replace SAP Best Practices baseline package Germany V1.603.
In general, new SAP Best Practices Packages are developed only on one specific release of an SAP application.
- In the area of SAP ERP,currently it is enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0.
SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0, which are localized for the same country can be activated in one client. Prerequisite: No industry specific Business Function Set is needed and client has not been used productively.
- In the area of SAP CRM,currently it is SAP CRM 2007 (SAP CRM 6.0).
- In the area of SAP NetWeaver BI,currently it is SAP NetWeaver BI 7.00.
Currently configuration add-ons are available for SAP ERP (BP-ERP05) and SAP CRM (BP-CRM60) plus the “tool-add-on” SAP Best Practices Solution Builder (BP-INSTASS):
Technical Add-On Planning for 2009:
BP-ERP05:
The delivery of four configuration add-ons on a quarterly basis based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0 is planned.BP-ERP05 603V5 is planned to be available by end of March 2009.BP-ERP05 603V6 is planned to be available by end of June 2009.BP-ERP05 603V7 is planned to be available by end of September 2009.BP-ERP05 603V8 is planned to be available by end of December 2009.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
There are NO plans to develop SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0. In other words, usage of SAP Best Practices packages are not supported on EHP4.
The next default SAP ERP version for SAP Best Practices package development is planned to be Enhancement Package 5 for SAP ERP 6.0.
For additional information see section “IV. Upgrades – Installation of Enhancement Packages and Dependencies to the SAP Best Practices Add-Ons”.

see section “III. Installation – Installation prerequisites”.
III. Installation
Before you install the add-on(s), take into account the following restrictions that will apply to the upgrade and maintenance of your SAP system as a result of installing an add-on:
You cannot uninstall an SAP ABAP add-on.
In systems in which an ABAP add-on is installed, you can upgrade only to SAP releases that are supported for this add-on. See section “V. Combination with other Add-Ons”. In addition you can install SAP ABAP add-ons only on systems meeting the defined software component version requirements.
The installation of the SAP Best Practices add-ons is performed in the standard procedure:Copy correct SAP archive files to /sapmnt/transUnpack the SAP archives to EPS inbox using in folder /sapmnt/trans the commandSAPCAR -xvf [archive.sar]Both add-ons can be imported in one queue using standard transaction SAINT.
The technical versioning of the SAP Best Practices add-ons contains the SAP application and release as well as the version of the technical SAP Best Practices add-on based on the specific SAP application.
The SAP Best Practices add-on versions are always Downward Compatible within the same SAP application release. This means that the next SAP Best Practices add-on version will always contain the objects delivered with the previous versions plus additional development and corrections.
- e.g. Add-on version BP-ERP05 603V4 will contain all the objects delivered with BP-ERP05 603V3 plus additional development and corrections.
Add-on’s on the Configuration DVD:
Only the current SAP Best Practices add-on versions are provided on the configuration DVD and they replace the former add-on versions.
Exception: Delivery of SAP Best Practices Solution Builder add-on BP-INSTASS 600V1 continuous as it is needed for SAP Best Practices packages with versions previous to V5.600 – see section “II. Overview”
The recommended procedure is:To install the SAP application server with the required support package stack (SPS) including the two SAP Best Practices add-ons.Perform the activation of the selected scope of the SAP Best Practices package.Update to the current released SPS and test your scenarios.
Versioning Example:
BP-ERP05 603V1:
This add-on is intended for SAP Best Practices packages – “BP-” – based on SAP ERP 6.0 (formerly known as SAP ERP 2005) – “ERP05″ – enhancement package 3 – “603″.
It is the first SAP Best Practices add-on version – “V1″ – for SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0.
BP-INSTASS 600V4:
This is the technical add-on of the SAP Best Practices Solution Builder (installation assistant / building block installer) for packages based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0, version 4. The term “600″ refers to SAP ERP 6.0 – hence it is valid for :SAP Best Practices packages based on SAP ERP 6.0.SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0.But is ALSO valid for SAP CRM 6.0, as they are based on the same SAP NetWeaver release. As a change of the technical name is not possible this can just be taken “as it is”.
With new delivered SAP Best Practices packages the technical add-on versions will be counted up (see section “II. Overview – Technical Planning”). But so far delivered SAP Best Practices packages originally based on technical add-on versions V1/V4 can as well be activated installing the current technical add-on versions.
Example:
SAP Best Practices Baseline package for Germany V1. 603 is the first Baseline Germany version based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0 and was technically delivered with BP-ERP05 603V1 and BP-INSTASS 600V4.
But in January 2009, BP-ERP05 603V4 and BP-INSTASS 600V6 are the only available technical add-on versions, delivered with the new SAP Best Practices packages end of 2008. These two add-ons can / have to be used for SAP Best Practices Baseline package for Germany V1.603 activation.
Of course this applies not for SAP Best Practices packages based on former SAP ERP versions! SAP Best Practices packages based on SAP ERP 6.0 w/o enhancement package cannot be installed/activated on a system containing enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0 vice versa.
The technical add-on BP-ERP05 603Vx does NOT contain the objects of BP-ERP05 600Vx (vice versa).
Only the SAP Best Practices Solution Builder (add-on BP-INSTASS 600Vx) is equal for all SAP ERP 6.0, enhancement package 3 and SAP CRM 6.0 based SAP Best Practices package activations – as the tools are based on the underlying SAP NetWeaver 7.00 release.
Installation prerequisites:

IV. Upgrades
Upgrades of SAP Best Practices Packages to their Next Version:
A SAP Best Practices package activation is intended as an implementation accelerator. Therefore the technical add-ons on whom the activation is based, are not used during the subsequent productive use of a system.
Technically new SAP Best Practices add-on versions can be installed using transaction SAINT but an ” Upgrade of an SAP Best Practices package to its next version in a productive client with a New add-on is neither intended nor supported “.
Only activations in empty clients copied from client 000 (SAP AG) including customizing but no application data are intended and supported. And of course in addition the system needs to meet the software component and support package version prerequisites for the activation to be performed.
SAP Application Upgrade
During a system upgrade, e. g. from SAP ERP 2004 (SAP ERP 5. 0) to SAP ERP 6.0, both SAP Best Practices add-ons are deleted as they can no longer be used.
Ofcourse any system with clients set-up with the help of SAP Best Practices package activation can be upgraded to any supported version with the regular upgrade tools and path provided by SAP for this case.
Installation of Enhancement Packages and Dependencies to the SAP Best Practices Add-Ons:
Currently SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0 localized for the same country can be activated in one client (compare section “II. Overview” for details). Therefore all packages based on enhancement package 3 for SAP ERP 6.0 refer to the complete ABAP stack of the enhancement package as a prerequisite.
SAP Best Practices packages on Enhancement Package 4:
There is NO plan to develop SAP Best Practices packages based on enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 (see section “II. Overview – Technical planning for 2009″ for details).
If you plan to implement scenarios relying on functionality delivered with enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 but still want to make use of the implementation acceleration of SAP Best Practices activation then you need proceed as follows:Firstly, install the required SAP ERP stack for the SAP Best Practices activation.Activate the selected scope of the SAP Best Practices package.Perform the regular SAP update of the needed enhancement package 4 components, with regular implementation and test of the affected and / or new scenarios on the current support package stack.Technically SAP provides a “Vendor Key” for the enhancement package 4 for SAP ERP 6.0 installation on systems containing SAP Best Practices add-ons. This is only to ensure that the upgrade is technically completed. To get the vendor key, kindly contact SAP. You can raise a message on component BC-UPG-ADDON.
“IMPORTANT NOTE” :
The functionality of the SAP Best Practices add-ons can NO LONGER BE USED ON ENHANCEMENT PACKAGE 4 for SAP ERP 6.0. (but the installation and functionality of the new enhancement package 4 components as such are not affected)
V. Combination with other Add-Ons
SAP Best Practices add-ons are completely independent from other add-ons and software components. So any add-on based on the underlying SAP application can be installed just like they are installed in systems without the SAP Best Practices add-ons.
VI. Maintenance (Support of Patches And Support Packages)
As SAP Best Practices package activation is an implementation acceleration, no support packages are delivered. However, corrections are included in the next technical add-on version. See section “III. Installation”. Intermediate corrections are delivered via the regular SAP notes corresponding to the SAP Best Practices package.
