Solution
It is SAP’s goal and strategy to ensure highest possible performance of the search and indexing capabilities in SAP NetWeaver which are bundled in the TREX engine. This goal is best reached with a very high exploitation of CPU architecture. Therefore, SAP needs to focus its optimizations on a small number of platforms and the following decision has been reached after careful consideration of all pros and cons for SAP’s customers, partners and SAP itself.
Starting with the next major release of SAP NetWeaver, TREX (expected to be labeled “TREX 7.1″) will only support the following platforms:
-> Microsoft Windows 2003-64 on x64 processors
-> Linux (Suse and RedHat) on x64 processors
This is a change compared to previous releases, where TREX supported a broad range of Windows, UNIX and Linux platforms. However, this consolidation of platforms is the best way to ensure the development and support of a highly performance-optimized TREX.
The TREX engine is generally operated in a “client/server” mode, with a TREX Java or ABAP client calling the actual TREX server and the TREX server is not dependent on any database or other software beyond the operating system and respective communication services (Web server, SAP Gateway). Therefore, the above platform strategy does have no limiting impact on any other SAP solution.
Of course, previous TREX releases (7.0 and below) will be supported on their respective platforms as communicated under http://service.sap.com/platforms -> Product Availability Matrix until their official end of maintenance. For TREX 7.0 this means, that it is supported on all originally supported platforms until 2014, if the 5+2+1 option is exercised.
Our hardware partners have been informed about this new platform strategy of the TREX engine and will be able to help you find your optimal solution
FAQs
1. What was SAP’s motivation to focus on Linux and Windows as TREX platforms?
It is SAP’s goal and strategy to ensure highest possible performance of the seach and indexing capabilities in SAP NetWeaver which are bundled in the TREX engine. This goal is best reached with a very high exploitation of CPU architecture. Therefore, SAP needs to focus its optimizations on a small number of platforms
2. When will TREX 7.1 be released?
TREX 7.1 will be shipped with the next major release of SAP NetWeaver. This is planned for 2007. More specific dates will be provided with official SAP NetWeaver communications.
3. When will the support for TREX version 7.0 on UNIX platforms end?
TREX 7.0 will continue to support UNIX platforms according to the SAP
support strategy (5+2+1) and the dates stated under
http://service.sap.com/pam.
This is valid for all platforms (see above link) that TREX 7.0 has originally been released for.
4. When will I find this information about TREX platforms in the Product Availability Matrix?
On the SAP Service Marketplace, you will find official information about TREX 7.1 platforms, as soon as information about the next major release of SAP NetWeaver is released.
5. Does this also affect the platforms for the BI Accelerator?
No, all of the above does not affect the appliance strategy for BI Accelerator. BI Accelerator stays on Linux on x64 only.
